Dear Author Gerd Brantenberg,

we are a feminist group in South Korea named <Megalia>.

As you can see, our group name <Megalia> comes from your work, <Egalias Daughters>.

The name <Megalia> is a combination between the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, otherwise known as MERS, and Egalia. Well explain in further detail below why MERS and Egalia had to be combined.

We are a group whose actions take place online. As a group, our goal is to resist the systematic female discrimination and misogyny in Korea. We have gathered since late May of the year 2015, and we are the most spotlighted issue in Korean internet culture until today.

We are writing this to let you know about the background of how our group came to be, and what we do. We would like to thank you for your book, and were hoping to receive a supportive message from you, the author of <Egalias Daughters>, a pivotal, essential part of our gathering.

 I
ll be writing in the following order:

1.      The characteristics of Korean society, and realities of sexual discrimination

2. Over the last 15 years, Korea has ranked number one in internet speed and internet distribution, and how that has unusually formed, impacted, and expanded into strong online misogyny, and how MERS came to impact the birth of <Megalia>

3. The rise of <Megalia> and how it came to be what it is today

4. What <Megalia> does, and how it suggests a new type of feminist activity called Online Feminism, and what we are striving to do in the future.

Itll be a long mail, but they are essential in explaining the history of misogyny in Korea and how dire it is. So we really ask you to please read this through until the end. Thank you.

1. The Characteristics of Korean Society and Realities of Sexual Discrimination in Korea

To explain the background of our emergence, we need to shortly explain the unusual characteristics of this country. Korea was under Japanese colonial rule for 35 years, and was liberated right after the Second World War. Shortly after, Korea was divided into North and South. After the war, South Korea stood up from war ruins into economic growth under a period of military dictatorship. It has only been about 25 years since we had a democratic government. South Korea was the first and the only country to become an aid-receiver into an aid-giver. Today, South Korea has grown into the 11th economically stable country in the world according to 2015 GDP.

In the shade of this quick economical growth, human rights, especially female rights, were strictly suppressed. Even under these poor conditions, female rights activists have pointed out the problems of the Confucian traditions deeply rooted in South Korea, and have strived to change them. However, patriarchy is still deeply rooted in Korean culture in many fallacious ways.

  .

Below is a list of objective figures as of 2015 in which you can see how dire misogyny in Korea is.

[

[Sex Offenses]

- Rape: One rape happens every 20 minutes

-Child sex offense penalty: Average of 3 years and 4 months

-Prostitution: Although prostitution is illegal in Korea, over 57.6% of Korean men have been involved in purchasing women for sex (Going to purchase women for sex is something to be proud of among Korean men, and many of them go in groups among friends and coworkers)

-Hidden camera: A website called “SoraNet” is an illegal pornography website which people upload unconsenting, unaware females’ bodies on videos and pictures, taken with hidden cameras stationed in public restrooms, public pools, and other public places. Over six million estimated users are involved with this website, and it is the number two searched website according to Google Korea. It has been around for over 15 years, but the Korean government never made a move on lawful punishment of persons concerned.

-Total hysterectomy due to uterine cervical cancer: Uterine cervical cancer is something usually seen in underdeveloped countries, but in average, 10 women per day are receiving total hysterectomy due to this sexual disease. It records over 4 to 5 times of other OECD members’ average. Recently, the cause of this disease was understood as sex-buying men transmitting sexual disease to other women.

-Single-mother support: The only member of OECD to still be involved in overseas adoption (Due to lack of support for single-mothers. Single-mothers in Korea receive a government subsidy of under 200 U.S. dollars per month)

A false impression of womenhood and female discrimination is created and distributed systematically in Korea right now. Women aren’t free from either sexual offense or everyday sexual harassment. Women and men receive the same kind of education, but entering into public affairs is more difficult for women. Pregnancy and childbirth are not protected properly. Many married couples turned into a two-paycheck couple, but child nurture and housework are still “traditionally” left for women to do. In job interviews, almost all women have received the rude question of “Are you planning on having a child soon?” When a pregnant woman goes on a maternity leave, her coworkers shun her as a selfish person. It is no surprise that Korea stays as the country with least childbirth among OECD members.

As you can see, female discrimination is a harsh reality in South Korea. However, for men, who have enjoyed their patriarchal authorities, seeing women emerge in society was a cause for feeling comparative deprivation. Also, Korea is the last standing divided country in the world, and male citizens are drafted to the mandatory military service. A regular soldier’s monthly wage is around 100 dollars. This is far below what they ought to receive in a country that ranks 11th in average GDP around the world. This is, of course, far from being a gender problem. However, many men in Korea consider this as gender discrimination. Instead of shouting “Give us our proper wage”, they shout “draft women into the army”. Therefore, ignoring all the other objective numbers as seen above, Korean men claim that Korea is a nation where women have better rights than men.

Also, the nonexistent “reverse discrimination” is used as a source of comedy online and on TV programs. Some male rights movements are claiming provisional women empowerment are “reverse discrimination” and are protesting against it. Since the 1990s, Korea has been number one in internet distribution and internet speed, so the cyberspace has been the platform in which such misogynistic thoughts were distributed far and wide. That started the culture of online misogyny.

2. The Forming of Online Misogyny and Its Expansion

(1) Introduction of Doenjang Girl

The history of internet misogyny started as internet became generalized in Korea. It is estimated as about 15 years, and the characteristics of internet misogyny are creating degrading words used against women, and distributing in its use. The first word to be widespread was “doenjang girl”. It’s a word mixed between a Korean traditional food called doejang (bean paste), and girl. It refers to a woman who drinks Starbucks coffee, eats pasta, carries designer handbag, likes foreign cars, and girls who date foreign men. This was an attempt to belittle women, by men who felt endangered in seeing the westernization of consumption tendency among women.

A person’s consumption tendency is not something to be condemned as long as they do not interfere with anyone else’s rights. However, this “doenjang girl” frame has emerged from the internet and penetrated through the real world and was used by many men. Even to this day, many women are looked down upon and are called as “doenjang girl” just because they own designer handbags. It is used as another suppression method on women. Women are unable to openly share their interests because they don’t want to be stigmatized as a “doenjang girl”.

(2) Rise of Kimchi Girl

In 2012, “kimchi girl” emerged in the misogyny scene. Kimchi is also a traditional Korean food. The reason behind men continuously making discriminative words with traditional Korean food is thought as an odd combination between national pride and inferiority complex against western culture. “Kimchi girl” is used to belittle women in many different areas, and it is practically indefinable. One female student used only one side of a notebook page, and was called a “kimchi girl”, and others were called a “kimchi girl” just because she said she does not want to give birth to a child. “Kimchi girl” is a typical discriminative word used against women whenever men don’t like what the women in front of him did.

On the contrary, there is a word called “ideal girl”, which is a word used to praise women who does exactly what the men wants a woman to do. The Madonna/whore complex has grown into “kimchi girl”/”ideal girl” complex in Korea.

(3) Other Discriminative Words

Not only the two words mentioned above, there are still many other words discriminating girls which are used online and offline. “Mrs. Kim” is a word used to discriminate female drivers, based on the stereotype that women are  poor drivers compared to men. This combines the title Mrs. and the last name Kim. Since Kim is one of the most common last names in South Korea, the title is problematic in that it enforces a stereotype against women in general. This word also was first used online, but now it is used so widely that it even shows up on TV news reports and newspapers.

Most other discriminative words are made with “Bo”, which comes from the Korean word “Boji”, and it means “vagina”. Word such as “Bo-squid” means vaginas smell like a dead squid. “Bo-pen car” means girls spread their legs for men with an open car (a Korean world for convertibles), “Bo-bird” refers to pedestrian women who die of a car accident, like a bird is sometimes hit by a car. “Bo-fficial” means a girl who uses men like an abusive government official. In the early 2015, a catch phrase “Bo-bulb-break” emerged, meaning they want to put a light bulb into a vagina and break it. So phrases like “I need… I need a light bulb!” was widely used online this year.

Even while this misogyny was happening, motherhood was thought of as something sacred, and was never touched. Not until this year. This year, a word called “Mom-sect”, which combines words “mom” and “insect” emerged, belittling mothers. This clearly shows that misogyny is reaching its peak, using discriminative words against even mothers.

(4) Impact of Online Misogyny Goes Offline

During the 15 years of online and offline misogyny, Korean women had to censor their own behaviors to not be labeled as a doenjang girl or a kimchi girl. We also have remained silent for a long time, thinking “It will get better.” However, misogyny did not recline, but rather began to root its “doenjang girl” concept deeper down into Korean society. This issue needs to come to the fore, because this verbal violence has not stopped in its own form, but  is leading towards a wrongful understanding of women in general.

In recent days, internet plays a bigger role than school in education of children. As mentioned before, Korea has number one internet distribution and internet speed, so internet is an essential part of our daily lives. In an online world full of misogyny, young adults naturally learn these degrading languages, and they also develop a misogynous way of thinking. The most tragic example is “Kim” incident. Kim was a young adult who just graduated elementary school. He was brainwashed through the misogynous internet culture, and slowly built a thought like this, and posted it on his Twitter: “Men are being discriminated against in this generation. I loathe feminists. That’s why I like the ISIS.” A little while later, Kim did join the ISIS through an unknown route, and recently have been reported as deceased after U.S. and Jordan bombing.

While this misogyny was happening online and was penetrating offline, there were no measures of any sort taken from the government to stop this from happening. Misogyny grew in its power with no one to stop it from happening. Then, May 2015, MERS was widespread in this country.

(1) MERS

MERS is a viral respiratory illness which first occurred in the Middle East area. Similar to SARS, people infected report having high fever, cough, shortness of breath, and it is highly deadly. No acute route of infection was diagnosed, but all patients infected were directly and indirectly involved with the Middle East.

May 2015, a man who visited the Middle East was first diagnosed with MERS. The government wasn’t prepared for the disease, as nobody thought it would impact Korea. Hence, it took a long time until the diagnosis was made, and this respiratory disease was spread among population, killing 36 people in total.

This inadequate handling of the government terrified many countries near Korea, including the Hong Kong government. A few press reported falsely that two Korean females refused to be quarantined in Hong Kong. Shortly after that article was released, the male members of one of the biggest internet website in Korea, DC Inside, posted degrading messages on the community’sMERS board,  saying things like “These kimchi girls are a disgrace to the whole country.” However, after a corrected news that two women did cooperate with the government officials was reported, many female users of the MERS board in DC Inside began to do a thing called “mirroring”, showing men exactly what they were doing.

(2) Mirroring

We began to take this action called mirroring, as seen from the imaginary reality in <Egalia’s Daughters>. As <Egalia’s Daughters> have switched the “traditional” female and male roles, we have changed the subject of misogyny from women to men. We made “doenjang boy”, “kimchi boy” instead of “doenjang girl”, “kimchi girl”, and degrading words combined with “pussy” was combined with “dick”. For example, we have switched “Bo-bulb-break” into “Urethra-pen-break”, et cetera.

Just as people were shocked when they first read <Egalia’s Daughters>, mirroring misogyny back to men had a huge effect on the internet world in Korea. Many women who were tired from being victimized for over 15 years experienced catharsis after seeing its effect. We were first able to break the stereotype that abusive languages were only allowed for men to use, and movements wanting to eradicate misogyny in Korea began to arise.

Mirroring male language also had an effect of diluting degrading meanings in their language as well. We have taken their cynical authorities in calling women discriminative names. We are calling this phenomenon as “Winning the linguistic power”. For example, we took “kimchi girl”, and took the front and change it into “god”, and it became “god-chi girl”. Women in Megalia call each other “god-chi girl”, diluting degrading meanings first in “kimchi girl” with satire and laughter.

(3) DC inside, Facebook Korea

(3) DC Inside, Facebook Koreas Discriminative Management

As women in MERS board began to continuously write mirroring messages, the website manager of DC Inside panicked. Although he (of course, he was a “he”) never stopped any misogyny in his website from happening, he quickly prohibited the word “kimchi boy”, and erased all related articles. Although men may have had a chance to look back on themselves for a self-examination on a decade of misogyny which went from online to offline, this biased management of DC Inside pretty much killed that chance..

However, this couldn’t stop women in MERS board from actions. We have registered <Megalian> into trademark rights. We opened Megalia pages on Twitter and Facebook. However, Facebook Korea has closed down Megalia pages four times in a row, just as DC Inside did. We have been reporting “kimchi girl” page with discrimination on Facebook, which has 170,000 followers. But we have been receiving answers that there is no discrimination happening on that particular page. We are currently signing petitions with messages to Facebook headquarters to stop Facebook Korea’s gender discrimination.

(4) Launch of the Website <Megalian>

After two months of suffering between DC Inside and Facebook, we finally got to launch our own website, Megalian (http://www.megalian.com/). After the website launched, Megalia’s actions are reaching far beyond what we anticipated.  Although mirroring still remains as a part of our identity, we make it known that it is one of the many tools we use to resolve gender discrimination and eradicate sexual crimes. The era of feminism which started online, Online Feminism finally began in this country.

4. What Megalia Does and Its Future

(1) Clean Up Online Comments

Megalia is a unique type of a feminist group, which has its roots online. The biggest change can be seen from online comment purification actions. It means to take the best comments of a particular page, especially on famous internet websites such as Naver, Daum, which are similar to Google. It has been one of our successful achievements.

From 15 years ago until May, when misogyny in Korea was rampant, best comments on any articles were related to female discrimination regardless of what the article was saying. Even if it did have something to do with an article, all of the best comments were degrading. For example, under a news article about a rape, the best comment would be something like “She must have worn a short skirt, so it’s her fault.” But now, Megalians are gathering our hands to change the best comments from misogyny.

July 13th, in a show program of Mnet Korea called “Show Me the Money”, one rapper named Song Mino recited a line saying, “Like MINO’s daughters, open your legs as if you’re with a gynecologist.” Meglians put this on the open waters as an issue to be dealt with, and it led to a statement from Korea Gyenecologist Association. Also, Mnet received the heaviest fine from Korea Communication Standards Commission.

(3) Anonymity

Everything that happens in Megalia is done anonymously. All of our nicknames on our websites are “OO”. None of us want to gain fame with these actions, but rather donate their money, talent and time anonymously. There are many professionals in Megalia, and they are donating their talents voluntarily. We were able to gather translators, designers, researchers, and even received legal consultations.

The reason why this anonymity was possible is that we all share one thing in common: We are women living in misogynic Korea. We share our wounds and heal them on our website. Since the government is not helping to protect us from misogyny and gender crimes, we are taking measures to ourselves. Also, anonymity is also a sad face of Korea, because the only way we’ll stay safe so far is to remain anonymous while we gather to do these works. As long as gender discrimination and sexual crimes are rampant, us Megalians won’t stop our actions.

(4) Future of Megalia

The number one internet distribution and internet speed in Korea gave birth to Megalia, which began a new type of feminist movement called online feminist movement. However, that same root also brought up 15 years of long systematic misogyny.

We got the idea of mirroring from reading your book, <Egalia’s Daughters>, and mirroring have been the tool for our activities for the last four months. Our achievement was made possible because Korean women grasped feminism and owned it. We believe feminism will be widespread with its roots on the internet, just as misogyny had for 15 years. It is only the beginning for us, and we are hoping to mark a pivotal point in the history of Korean women.

Me-men!

MERS was a pivotal point in letting us finally open our eyes. And <Egalia’s Daughters> was a centerpoint which brought us together. Your book, <Egalia’s Daughters> was released 7,737kilometers away in Norway, 38 years ago in 1977. And we are here in South Korea today in 2015, gathered as <Megalia> in action. From <Egalia’s Daughters>, we became <Megalia’s Daughters>. A word of support from you will be a great encouragement to us, just starting to make a voice in this new type of feminism, online, <Megalian> feminism in Korea.

We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you very much. Me-men!

P.S. Me-men is a combination between Megalia and Amen, and we bid each other goodbye with this word at the end of our writings on our website.

With love and thanks,

Megalia’s Daughters
